Hoarding

Hoarding was recognized as a distinct disorder for the first time in May of 2013 in the publication of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. This official classification confirmed something property management companies and owners and Fair Housing properties already knew. Hoarding is a mental disorder and a protected class.

Before 2013 many of us knew nothing about hoarding.  But shows like "Hoarding: Buried Alive" have shown us all the complexities of a hoarding situation.  It goes far beyond removing clutter and debris.  Just like a water damage situation, secondary damage can be caused.  And of course the underlying mental disorder has to be treated in conjunction with cleaning the structure.
